I’m sure most of you, as I am, are on back to school mode – or should I say back to craziness mode?
So we are back to crazy schedules, impossible logistics, homework dramas, all this meaning time for you is close to none. Despite the lack of time, your dreams – having a more fullfiling career, be our own boss, have a flexible job, create an NGO, travel around the world, you name it – your dreams keep nudging you on and on, as a reminder to take action.
If that’s you, If your dreams are still in your head and you don’t find time to make them happen, here’s how to change things and be on track to fulfill your dreams.
- Get over the excuse you don’t have time
Blunt, right? But powerful. We all have 24h in a day, so we all are given the same amount of time. But not all of us are alike in the way we use our time. I’m sure you can think of someone around you who fits in a day what you would fit in a week. So the issue is not having time but what we do in the time we are given. Are you doing things that really matter to you? If you’ve had a dream on the bench for a while, thinking someday it will fit better my schedule, someday I’ll have more resources, someday I’ll have more time, STOP and take action.
“Stop waiting for someday; someday is a myth. Dont wait to have the time: start planning to make this time»
Rachel Hollis
- Clarify your goals or your dreams
First action to take is to clarify your goal or dream. What is it that want to accomplish or who do you want to become? You need to ensure that whatever you want to pursue is really meaningful to you. Understand the why behind your dream as it will help you keep going when things get though.
- You are the owner of your schedule
May sound controversial to some, but you are in control of your schedule. Anything on your agenda is there either because you’ve added it yourself or you’ve allowed it to be there. So anything in you calendar, agenda, iCal, outlook, etc is on you, even the boss meeting request.
Let it sink in.
As we tend to go through the days on autopilot, we may not realise that we are always at choice. It may not feel or sound like having a choice but we do.
“When everything is important. Nothing is important”
- Make the time
So now that you are clear on what you want to achieve and are pumped about it, you have to make the time. What does this mean? You need to find 5h/week, 1h/day to invest in your dream, or how ever you want to organise yourself. For that to happen and be able to carve out time in your busy schedule, commitment and motivation needs to be high. You need to be willing to trade time to pursue your dream. Remember your why? It might mean that you wake up 1h earlier from now on. It might mean you don’t watch Netflix in the evening. It might mean you «outsource» some of the house chores. Whatever works for you. These hours need to be considered non-negotiable. You commit to them, you promise them to yourself. Don’t sabotage yourself!
“If you want something you’ve never had, you have to do something you’ve never done”
Rachel Hollis
- Focus & Consistency
Now you are ready to implement and start planning your first week. It’s all about focus and consistency.
Focus on progress not perfection.
Focus on your goal and action plan but don’t be overwhelmed by it. It’s all about small steps.
Consistency in taking action. Take immediate action. Don’t wait. If not now, when?
Consistency in staying in action. Don’t give up on yourself. If this dream or goal is so important to you you will get there, but don’t stop. Keep moving forward even with minuscule steps.
Check and tweak as you go to ensure you are in the right direction.
I would love to hear about your dreams and how you are making time to make them a reality.
To your fulfillment,
Sophie
